The strategic location of the Salem plant allows it to cater to the demanding needs of the major auto hubs in South India. Located around 340 kilometers from Chennai and 180 kilometers from Bangalore, it is well connected with railway lines, highways and ports, which makes the transportation of raw materials and finished products easy. This, coupled with its start-of-the-art technology and unique processes, makes Salem a steel plant that’s truly a cut above the rest.

JSW Steel Ltd., Salem Works, India’s largest Special Alloy Steel Plant (Long products) has been awarded the coveted Deming Prize for 2019.

2010 The 0.5 MTPA Blooming Mill was commissioned

2010 Diversified into special steels from commodity steels

2011 A DSIR Approved R&D Centre was established

2011 Commissioned an Automatic Inspection line for BRM products

2012 Commissioned an Automatic Inspection line for blooming mill products

2012 Commissioned a de-dusting system for BF and EOF

2013 The Coke Drier Unit was commissioned

2013 A ‘reducing and sizing block’ for superior surface finishing was commissioned

2014 Commissioned a wagon tippler with horizontal transfer mechanism

2014 Launched TQM’s book of 100 best projects

2014 The WHRB-4 was successfully commissioned

2014 The OHSAS 18001 system was successfully implemented

2015 AS 9100 system was implemented

2015 Moved from an oil-fired furnace to a gas-fired furnace

2015 Major capital repair works at BF II

2016 EOF capacity was increased to 65 MT from 45 MT

2016 Size development in Hexagon

2016 WHRB-4 was successfully commissioned

Iron Zone

It Contains Wagon Tippler, Sinter Plant, Coke Oven, PCI unit and Blast Furnace where Iron Ore is getting converted into a Hot Metal

Energy Optimization Furnace

It is an Oxygen Steel Making Process best suited for Alloy steel production from Hot Metal. Carry over Slag is removed by Slag Raking to ensure Clean Steel making

Ladle Refining Furnace and Vacuum Degassing

Further refining of steel is done in Ladle furnace by deoxidizing and desulphurizing the steel under continuous Argon / Nitrogen purging which facilitates flotation of inclusions, homogenization of Chemistry and Temperature. Targeted chemistry and temperature is achieved by requisite addition of Ferro Alloys under Arcing conditions. In VD, Liquid Steel is exposed to < 1 mbar pressure level which serves purposes from reducing dissolved gases to removal of Non-Metallic Inclusions

Continuous Casting Machine

Three Strands Continuous Casting Machine with double radius of 9/16 meters for Billets (CCM1) and triple radius of 12/16.5/30 meters for Blooms (CCM2 and 3). CCMs' are equipped with Ar shroud, Tundish with Dams & Weir, SEN, Slag Detection System, AMLC, EMS for Internal Quality Improvement

Blooming Mill

Hot Rolled Bar Size range : >65 to 200ø and 55 to 300 RCS from the input blooms 250X250 (or) 280X370 (or) 340X400. Online Size Measurement is possible through Hot Profiler. And it is equipped with Slow Cooling facility.

Catalyst in PCI injection to improve combustibility

Bar & Rod Mill

Hot Rolled Size range : 20 to 65ø Bars, 5.5 to 32ø Wire Rod, 60X7 to 101X38 Flats, 20 to 45 Hex-Bars, 20 to 32 Hex-Wire Rod and 20 to 65ø Precision Rolled Black Bars from the input blooms ranging from 160 to 220 square / RCS. It Contains Reducing Sizing Block (RSB) by which we can supply Precision Rolled Black Bars (Close Dimensional Tolerance). Wire Rod Production line is equipped with Hot Eye Inspection facility for Surface Inspection

Bar Annealing Facility

It has electrically heated Continuous Roller Type furnace for Straight Length Bars. Heat treatments carried out are Spheroidization Annealing, Stress Relieving, Soft Annealing & RCA

Bell (or) Wire Rod Annealing

It has electrically heated Bell type furnaces for Wire Rod products. Supporting facility like Pickling and Phosphating units are also available for Wire Rod products. Heat treatments carried out are Spheroidization Annealing, Stress Relieving, Soft Annealing & RCA

Bright Bar Unit

It has one Peeling & Reeling (Straightening), two Centerless Grinding machines. Based on the Customer Specific requirement, offering as per either h9 or h11 dimensional tolerances

Scanning Electron Microscope

SEM with magnification limit up to 300000X - Equipped with SE (Secondary Electron) for surface morphology, BSD (Back scattered detector) for Phase analysis and EDS for chemical composition. It is being used for New Product Development and Process Control

Immersion Ultrasonic Tester

It is a volumetric analysis used to determine the cleanliness level of the steel. It is being used for New Product Development and Process Control
