What is Galvanized Steel?

The term “galvanized” comes from Luigi Galvani, an Italian scientist whose work on electrochemical reactions in the late 18th century helped explain how metals behave in the presence of an electrolyte.

Galvanizing uses the electrochemical difference between zinc and iron. Since zinc is more reactive, it corrodes first, protecting the steel underneath from rust and degradation.

This creates a dual protection system. The zinc coating provides a physical barrier, while also offering cathodic protection if the surface is scratched or damaged. Unlike paint, which only acts as a barrier, galvanized steel continues to protect the base metal even when the coating is compromised.

The galvanization process
