JSW Steel's Vision 000

Zero major incidents | Zero injuries | Zero harm

Safety Culture

We are committed to continuously strengthening our safety culture to achieve our aim of Zero Harm. To deepen this culture and build systemic maturity, we regularly roll out several initiatives. These efforts are anchored on three key strategic thrusts:

Effective Leadership

Visible and accountable leadership, proactive hazard identification, and strong engagement through culture surveys form the foundation of our robust safety culture. Our efforts include:

  • Conducted Safety Culture Survey, covering ~ 55,000+ employees and contract workers across Vijayanagar, Dolvi, BPSL, Anjar, BMM Ispat and other sites; driving behavioural science-based interventions through insights.
  • Monthly Apex safety meetings to review safety performance
  • Launched Project Chetna to promote psychological safety and cultural transformation.
  • Leadership Gemba Walks enabled senior management to directly engage with the workforce and model proactive safety behaviours on the shop floor.

Robust Systems

Robust systems form the backbone of a resilient safety culture by driving governance, standardization, and data-driven decision-making. To strengthen this foundation, we have launched key initiatives, including:

  • Enhanced JSW Safety Framework to 15 standards.
  • Adopted DuPont’s Process Safety Management for proactive safety culture.
  • Enforced 10 JSW Critical Safety Rules across all workforce segments;
  • Five Group Level Safety Subcommittees – SO&A, PSM, IIS, Contractor Safety Management and Standards & Procedures – to oversee specialised areas of safety governance.
  • DVP (Digital Visual Platform) - Launched at Dolvi & Coated Vasind with AI use cases, including unique applications for PPE violations, unauthorised parking, and crowd detection with real-time alerts and automated report
  • Pilot Project at Coke Oven – Dolvi – Connected Workers (Rakshak) to enhance workplace safety.

Competent Workforce

We build a future-ready workforce through targeted training, competency assessments, and SME-led expertise in critical safety domains like LOTO, Work at Height, PPE, and Contractor Safety through key initiatives like:

  • Ongoing Subject Matter Expert training and 14 safety modules, including PPE and hazard updates; covering deep technical knowledge and practical application skills of key safety domains.
  • Safety, at JSW, is a mandatory KRA for the entire workforce with a weightage of 10-15% of the total KRAs.
  • Skill and competency assessments conducted for more than 95,000 workmen, enabling tailored safety training interventions
  • Fully operational Safety Experience Centres are fully operational at Vijayanagar, Dolvi, Salem, and BPSL

Tailings Management at Vijayanagar

Pond Operational Detail
Pond 1 Pond 1 is currently undergoing dredging operations. The extracted tailings paste is sent to the Slime Recovery Plant (SRP), where iron-bearing material with >45% Fe content is recovered. This high-grade material is then forwarded to the Pellet Plant for palletization.
Pond 2 The residual tailings from the SRP, containing <45% Fe, are transferred to Pond 2 for secure storage. This ensures efficient segregation and management of low-grade material.
Pond 3 Pond 3 receives fresh tailings directly from the ore beneficiation plant. These tailings are thickened for paste transportation, and dewatering is carried out to enhance the stability of the bunds, ensuring structural integrity and environmental safety.

Community Outreach for Safety

Established in 2000 under the Karnataka Chapter of the National Safety Council, the Vijayanagar Action Centre drives safety excellence across industries in the Bellary – Koppal region as part of JSW Steel’s CSR commitment. To achieve this, the Centre undertakes impactful initiatives such as:

  • Conducting safety training programs on legal compliance, working at height, confined space entry, emergency preparedness, road safety, construction safety, and more
  • Organizing interactive sessions with Factory Directorate Officers for neighboring industries
  • Providing emergency services for villages and industries
  • Distributing and maintaining fire extinguishers in 25 government schools
  • Hosting safety competitions for employees, school children, and women

Employee Wellbeing

We go beyond the workplace to care for our people—offering benefits that nurture health, learning, and balance, such as:

  • JSW We Care – a 24×7 confidential counselling service dedicated to the emotional and mental well-being of our employees and their families
  • 100% semi-annual performance reviews completed; integrating four key approaches: management by objectives; multidimensional performance appraisal for selected levels,; team-based performance appraisal; and agile conversations.
  • Fifth consecutive Great Place to Work (GPTW) certification, alongside the prestigious 'India's Best Employers Among Nation-Builders 2025' award.
  • Employee access to townships, gyms, and other facilities at select locations, supporting a healthy and balanced lifestyle for our employees.
